Traveling with a wedding dress may sound daunting, but it’s really quite simple if you plan accordingly! Here are five tips for transporting it easily from point A to point B:

Carry it With You

The number one thing we recommend when traveling with your wedding dress is to carry it with you. This also applies to all your bridal accessories (veil, shoes, jewelry, etc.) and even the groom’s wedding attire. The chance of checked luggage getting lost or stolen is always a possibility and you simply cannot afford to take that risk. Bringing these items along with you will put your mind at ease in knowing they won’t get lost or damaged.

Use a Durable Garment Bag

To ensure your wedding dress is protected throughout your journey, be sure to bring it in the garment bag it came in or purchase a more durable one. This will keep your dress intact once you arrive at your final destination and prevent it from getting damaged or stained along the way.

Combine Belongings

It might be a good idea for you and your soon-to-be to share a carry-on, as some airlines consider a garment bag a carry-on. Though some brides have no problem going through security with the two, it’s best to be safe and not chance it.

Board Early

If at all possible, we recommend asking the airline attendants at your gate if you could board a bit earlier so you have enough overhead space for your gown. Most people have a soft spot for brides and are happy to accommodate you if they can!

Store in Overhead Compartment

You might also want to consider befriending any flight attendants, as they could potentially find a spot for your wedding dress in one of the first-class closets. If that isn’t an option, you’ll want to loosely fold your garment bag into three sections and place it on top of any belongings you have in the overhead compartment. This should help prevent any wrinkles or creases for the time being – though once you get to your resort, let it hang over a tall door with the train completely out so the fabric can relax.
