After a fun-filled journey overseas, the idea of waiting in a long U.S. customs line can be daunting. Here’s how Global Entry can help you avoid that long line and why I recommend it for international travel!
What is Global Entry?
The U.S. Global Entry Program is a quick and efficient way to re-enter the U.S. and bypass customs through an electronic kiosk. It helps avoid long lines after an exhausting day of traveling and gets you home to your family faster! Essentially, it requires an application and screening process ahead of time. Then, once you return home, all you have to do is check-in at the kiosk in customs, and be on your way!
How to Apply
Create a Trusted Travelers Program account on the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website. Fill out the application and pay the $100 fee, which covers you for five years. Your application will be reviewed, and a member of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection will conduct a background check. After approval, set up an appointment for an in-person interview at the Enrollment Center. It may take a while before the interview is set up, but you can show up at the airport as a walk-in if you’d like to speed up the process.
How to Use Global Entry
Once your Global Entry status is confirmed, you’ll receive your Known Traveler number. When you return to the U.S., scan your passport or permanent resident card, verify your fingerprints and declare any products or goods you’re bringing back to the U.S. You’ll get a receipt and move right along!
How is it different than TSA PreCheck?
The difference is that TSA PreCheck expedites your way through airport security when departing on your trip. In contrast, Global Entry allows you to move quickly through the customs checkpoint when arriving back home. The best part? You can enjoy the convenience of both since TSA PreCheck is included with your Global Entry status. Global Entry costs $15 more than TSA PreCheck alone, so it’s not a bad investment!
Do My Kids Need Global Entry?
Yes, each traveler will need their own pass regardless of age.
