Carrying money safely while traveling can get tricky at times. Here are seven tips for keeping yourself inconspicuous and organized along the way!

Divide Your Money

Whenever possible, we suggest you divide your cash and credit cards into multiple safe spots so that a potential thief can’t wipe you out at once. Consider putting your credit cards in a bag you carry and cash on your body. This will at least allow you to cancel your credit cards immediately, should someone pickpocket your bag. It’ll also leave you with some cash to get yourself back to your hotel or the police station.

On-Body Storage

Looking for a way to keep cash on you? Then, you might want to consider an under-clothing storage accessory, such as a neck pouch or money belt. Feeling extra protective of your Benjamins? Then, take it the next level with a bra stash or underwear with built-in pockets for safer storage.

Theft-Proof Bag

Think a cut-proof bag doesn’t exist? Think again. Many manufacturers have come up with practical travel bags that keep safety in mind, such as the Travelon anti-theft bag, or Ebags. Common features include slash-proof material, steel-cable reinforced shoulder straps, and locking zipper compartments. These designs help deter opportunistic thieves and could be a great investment for your future travel needs.

Clean out Your Belongings

While you might use your library card on a weekly basis, you probably won’t need it on vacation. Be sure to clean out your wallet and purse of items that could weigh you down when traveling. Packing just the necessities gives you less to replace should your wallet or bag get stolen along the way.

Dummy Wallet

Purchasing a cheap “dummy wallet” is a great way to fool a potential mugger. Simply pad the wallet with a few smaller bills and fake cards to give it a realistic appearance. It also serves as a decoy to throw off the pickpocket and run to safety, should the situation arise.

Lock Valuables Away

We always suggest travelers utilize their hotel’s in-room safe or lockbox for when your belongings will be left unattended. Just remember it’s in there when you’re scurrying to check-out in a hurry!

Plan Accordingly

Be sure to look into what currency you’ll be using or what tickets you’ll need for transportation ahead of time so you can plan accordingly. We recommend purchasing multi-use cards for things like public transportation to limit the number of times you’ll have to retrieve your wallet. You also might want to bring a few forms of currency if the place you’re visiting accepts multiple types.
